The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) has developed a five-point plan with the goal of setting up a 1.5GW PV plant a year to support development. The statement called for the South African government to actively cooperate with the solar energy industry to provide commitment and policy support.
Davin Chown, president of SAPVIA, said South Africa has abundant solar energy resources to be developed, which is cheaper than alternative energy sources and makes a significant contribution to the environment.
"The need to revitalize South Africa's economy is so pressing that only a creative partnership between all social partners can meet this need and create benefits for all communities in South Africa."
The plan is to create 55,000 jobs by 2025. Adopt project owner programs such as large-scale utility projects and community-owned projects to promote economic development.
Plans also include the creation of IPP and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), investment promotion, and promotion of special funds to support women, entrepreneurship in the youth and nurturing young black entrepreneurs.
"It's also a technology that does not require the use of fuel and is relatively easy to install throughout South Africa and will benefitcommunities and regions that lag behind in economic development and industrial failures."
SAPVIA plans to launch a solar energy industry development plan in the next six months to promote the industrialization of renewable energy and to cover the declining mining area.
Currently, the industry is ready for the upcoming 1.5GW development and pending approval.
Last year, due to the delay in signing the solar power purchase agreement under the Renewable Energy Purchase Project, development of the South African solar industry was hindered.
